LEPTIN REGULATES HEALTHY METABOLIC RATE

People with symptoms of the anorexic-like starvation metabolism have one thing in common – leptin levels that are too low. Adequate leptin tells the brain there is adequate fuel on hand; thus, metabolic activity in the body can function at an active metabolic rate. This is healthy, a condition in which natural balance can occur.

Too little leptin tells the body it is starving; therefore, the brain turns down metabolic rate and function. The longer and more sustained the anorexic eating metabolism becomes, the greater the chance for chronically induced low-leptin levels. When a person gets stuck in low leptin over a period of time, it locks in a serious eating disorder with serious health consequences.360

Many problems of not enough leptin are similar to those of too much leptin. This is because leptin resistance means the leptin message does not get through to the brain. In leptin resistance, there is low leptin in the brain, high leptin in the circulation, and leptin resistance in the pancreas causing metabolic syndrome X. Excess cortisol combines with high circulating leptin to make a person fat in the stomach. This results in a condition of fatigue and increased risk of disease.

On the flip side of this picture, the clinical anorexic has low levels of leptin in the brain and low levels of leptin in the circulation. There is excess cortisol, a catabolic hormone, combined with low leptin. This combination forces body wasting to occur. There is also fatigue and increased risk of disease.

In between these two is the leptin-resistant individual who keeps trying to employ the low-calorie diet to lose ten pounds and who cannot do it. The dieting itself makes the person have anorexic-like wear and tear, yet the five to ten pounds on the tummy will not budge.

The leptin-resistant state and the low-leptin anorexic state share these common features: low leptin in the brain, high cortisol in circulation, fatigue, increased risk of disease, and accelerated rate of aging.

Many individuals flip-flop between leptin resistance and low-leptin issues, the essence of yo-yo dieting. Many dieters hit a starvation-metabolism brick wall long before they get to their goal weight. The longer they stay in this dangerous condition, the more body muscle and bone they lose – not fat.

Thus, we have the starvation dieters who have the metabolic profile and faulty immune response of anorexics. This includes low-leptin induced depression,361,362 muscle weakness that has been diagnosed as fibromyalgia, and loss of bone density, 363,364 yet they may be fifty to one hundred pounds overweight!

Additionally, animals that lack leptin demonstrate that the immune cells in their livers become overactive, generating inflammation that damages other healthy liver cells and leads to liver disease.365

Women who get stuck in the anorexic metabolic pattern begin to lose function of their hormonal cycle. This may show up as scanty or skipped cycles.366 If the low-leptin problem is left unchecked, it can develop into infertility or a higher risk for miscarriage if there is a pregnancy.367 This is a primary
